Investment Portfolio Overview August 2020_Banner

Loads of things going on in August in my Portfolio. I entered three new positions and sold two of my existing holdings. I also came out first in terms of monthly performance against my benchmarks. Momentum was definitely on my side in August. I’m having solid cash-reserves, which I’m looking to get into the market during the rest of the year and hoping to not only break-even on the annual performance but even making a nice profit after the Corona Disaster in the First Quarter of the Year.
I hope you enjoy reading my investment portfolio review for August 2020.

Performance

Performance August 2020

August went pretty well for my portfolio. I’m far ahead of the rest of the group with gaining 8.1% on the month. Although the overall market hat a good run in August. That’s good to see, especially after the more or less flat July. If Momentum keeps continuing at that pace, I might soon be back to break-even on the year.
Here are the benchmarks:

  • FTSE UK All Share Index: 2.1%
  • FTSE 100: 0.4%
  • FTSE Mid 250: 4.9%
  • Vanguard Total World Stock ETF: 6.0%
YTD Performance Dan Schenk Life Investment Trust - Investment Portfolio Review August 2020

Year to date, we can see that the first benchmark is already back in the green. The stunning Vanguard Total World Stock ETF. The other benchmarks including my portfolio are still in the red, although I was able to further close the gap to break-even. While the UK benchmarks are still very much down and swinging around -20% at the moment. I’m currently down only -4%, so one or two solid green months and I should be back in the green. That is if there’s not another crash coming around the corner.
Here are the benchmarks:

  • FTSE UK All Share Index: -19%
  • FTSE 100: -21%
  • FTSE Mid 250: -19%
  • Vanguard Total World Stock ETF: 3%
Cumulative Performance Dan Schenk Life Investment Trust - Investment Portfolio Review August 2020

Looking at the cumulative performance, I was able to further establish my second spot, however, still being in the red with a -2% decline since August 2017. It’ll be a tough race to catch the leading benchmark, the Vanguard Total World Stock ETF, which is up 20%, but nothing’s impossible.

  • FTSE UK All Share Index: -9%
  • FTSE 100: -20%
  • FTSE Mid 250: -10%
  • Vanguard Total World Stock ETF: 20%

Holdings

Top Holdings

Below the Top 10 holdings as of August 2020.

Bit of a re-shuffle on the Top 10 holdings, due to me selling not only one but two out of my top 10 positions last month: Asian Total Return Investment Company PLC and Fresnillo PLC. See the breakdown of those two investments below.
This means, there was space for two new-comers to join the Top 10, which are Royal Dutch Shell PLC and Polar Capital Holdings PLC, both making out 3% of my portfolio respectively.

Also, my cash holdings are now making up more than 12%, which means I’m looking aggressively for companies to invest in, but that’s not an easy task right now.

Lastly, Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust PLC has been trending close to my target price of 1100p for a while now, but not broken above it yet. With it making up 12% of my portfolio I’m looking to sell my stake, but waiting for the right price and opportunity.

Asian Total Return Investment Company PLC - Dan Schenk Life Investment Trust - Investment Portfolio Review August 2020

This is one of my oldest holdings. I entered my first position as early as 2017 and added twice throughout 2018.
Obviously missed a huge opportunity in mid-March 2020 to buy the “Corona Dip”, but that’s life.
Overall still banked some profit, although not the biggest one. 13% including dividends.

Fresnillo PLC @1250p

  • Price entered: 630p (01/2020)
  • Price closed: 1250p
  • Profit % (incl. Dividends): 94%
Fresnillo PLC - Dan Schenk Life Investment Trust - Investment Portfolio Review August 2020

This investment played out fairly quickly. I almost doubled my initial investment in only 8 months on this. Like it.
Entered in January 2020 at 630p and sold in August at 1250p. Juicy 94% return including one dividend payout in June.
Pretty much perfectly timed the bottom before the reversal kicked-off.
